Starting an AFCOMAP Chapter
The first step in starting a new chapter is to contact the National Chapter Liaison.

The initiator receives a start-up package with various documents for guidance and reference.
He/She must submit to the National Chapter Liaison a letter listing names and contact
information of those officers who will initially fill the mandatory positions of President
(recommended O-4/O-5), Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Advisor (recommended
O-5/O-6). Officers may also be nominated to fill other non-mandatory positions such as
Historian, Chaplain, Membership Coordinator, and Coordinator for Professional Development.

The start-up package also contains a roster of all AFCOMAP chapters and officers. Many new
chapters have gained a great deal of knowledge from existing chapters in neighboring
locations/bases on what has and has not worked for them in starting a chapter. The listing is a
useful tool, providing a network of mentoring and support for chapter officers among each
other and with the National Headquarters.

In starting a new chapter, it is vital to gain the support of the base commander. Such active
support will not only bring wide endorsement and support at lower levels, but will increase
the likelihood of long-term success of the chapter. In the initial meeting, the prospective
chapter president should ensure he/she is well versed in the commander’s goals and ways
AFCOMAP can help achieve them. Often this is an education process as many officers may not
be familiar with AFCOMAP or its purposes.

Gaining the interest and support of the base population is next and may also be an education
process. It is recommended that each chapter staff a package as required to appropriately
inform base leadership about the organization. The new chapter should advertise the
organization, gain interest for initial meetings and publicize professional development and
visitation activities.
